3.Inspirations from Social Network Analysis: A Study on the Efficacy of Regional Trade Agreements

讲座内容 ：Borrowing insights from economic sociology and world system theory, this study highlights the dual “embeddedness” of regional trade agreements (RTAs) and examines the contingent nature of their trade-promoting effect. While overall RTAs are found to promote bilateral trade, the trade-promoting effect varies. First, RTAs are embedded in dyadic homophily. Geographic, political, and cultural proximity provides a favorable institutional environment for the materialization of the trade-expanding potential unleashed by RTAs. Most RTAs are predominantly focused on reducing trade barriers and are far less effective in creating effective institutions (especially informal institutions), thereby rendering the actual effectiveness of RTAs dependent on dyadic homophily. Second, RTAs are also embedded in the overall world system. RTAs between wealthy core countries boost trade more effectively than those between less developed peripheral countries.

2.Growth in groups: direct and inverse problems

讲座内容 ：This largely survey talk is a prequel to the talk “Measure doubling of small sets in SO(3,ℝ)” (joint work with Jing Yifan and Zhang Ruixiang) given in Beijing Logic Meeting 2023. I will explain why the use of model theory is not accidental in such combinatorics flavored results and is to some degree the same reason we can show that large stable fields are separably closed (joint work with Will Johnson, Erik Walksberg, and Ye Jinhe).

More mathematically, we consider a group G equipped with a notion of size (cardinality, Haar measure, etc), and let A be a subset of G. The following problems are of interest: (i) Find inequalities relating the size of the product set A^k ={a_1  a_k: a_1, a_2 \in A} and the size of A.  (ii) Understand when the size of A^k is not too large compared to that of A. These are called the direct and inverse problems for growth in groups.

2.历史上的奴隶贸易与非洲企业逃税

讲座内容 ：The institution-based view in international business suggests that differences in firm behaviors across countries are affected by institutions that set rules of the game. However, the origin of the institutional environment remains underexplored. In this paper we explore how history shapes the institutional environment pertaining to tax evasion, a popular corporate strategic (although illegal) decision. Specifically, we examine the impact of the African slave trade on corporate tax evasion in modern Africa. We document that firms are more likely to evade taxes in countries that suffered a higher level of historical slave extraction. We further show that historical exposure to the slave trade has a long-lasting negative impact on tax compliance attitudes in the society and the quality of tax enforcement institutions. Our paper echoes the growing calls to bring history and Africa into management research by highlighting and quantifying a pronounced historical determinant of cross-country

2.The isometric embedding of abstract surfaces in the Euclidean space

讲座内容 ：A surface in the 3-dimensional Eucidean space can be viewed as the image of a map from a planar domain to the 3-dimensional Euclidean space, at least locally.The standard metric in Euclidean space induces a metric on the surface, which allows us to compute the lengths of curves on the surface and to compute the distance of any two points on the surface.The induced metric on the surface can be transformed into an abstract metric by the abovementioned map.Now, we consider the converse question. Given an abstract metric on a planar domain or on a closed surface, can we find a surface in the 3-dimensional Eucildean space whose induced metric is the given abstract metric? This is the isometric embedding problem. It started with a conjecture by Schlaefli in 1873 that this can always be achieved near any given point. This conjedture is widely open and there are only a few results under various conditions. The question can be reformulated in terms of partial differential equations.
