Microplastics in freshwater systems: occurrence and effects
In recent years, many studies have reported the widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater ecosystems. However, determining the environmental factors that play key roles in influencing the distribution of MPs and exploring the influence of multiple environmental variables on their distribution remains an important challenge in the field. Although machine learning has recently brought hope to the traceability of complex system models, field research is still incomplete, and many uncertainties remain. In particular, the significant spatiotemporal variation of MPs in freshwater ecosystems, which is influenced by basin geomorphology, MPs properties, and so on, has a significant influence on the estimation of MPs occurrence. This is particularly true for riverine MPs research, where an accurate assessment of riverine flux of land-based plastics and MPs is required to properly manage plastic pollution in the marine environment. This VSI covers all aspects of the occurrence, fate, transport, and ecotoxicological effects of (micro)plastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems.
