Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei has said Chinese people should not resort to, quote, “harmful nationalism,” in view of the company’s ongoing spat with the Trump administration.

Ren Zhengfei made the comment during a group interview in Shenzhen on Monday with multiple Chinese media outlets, including Caixin.

He said, quote, “It is wrong to say that purchasing Huawei’s products equals being patriotic … don’t link that with politics.”

The comments came after the U.S. Commerce Department last week added the Chinese telecom giant to a list of companies required to obtain U.S. government approval to purchase critical components and services from American firms.

Amid an intensifying trade war between Beijing and Washington, the recent targeting of the company stirred some in China to attempt to boycott U.S. firms in support of Huawei.

But Ren said, quote, “At Huawei, we won’t resort to nationalism and populism, because that is harmful to our country.”

In what was seen as a reprieve for the Chinese company, the U.S. Commerce Department issued a license on Monday allowing Huawei to continue to trade with U.S. firms for the next three months.

But Ren said the measure had, quote, “little meaning” to Huawei.

He added that his company had anticipated future conflict with the U.S., and the company had been working on a backup plan to develop its own chips for many years.

The company has said it still imports about 30 percent of its components from the U.S.

Ren said, despite mounting restrictions from the U.S. government, Huawei will continue purchasing chips from U.S. companies and selling products to U.S. customers.

Chinese drone-maker DJI has responded to a U.S. government warning that many believe was aimed in its direction.

The Department of Homeland Security said some Chinese-made drones may contain components that can compromise users’ data and share information with servers accessible by the Chinese government.

While the department did not mention specific companies, a CNN report linked the warning to DJI, which dominates the North American drone market.

In an official statement, DJI said all data produced, stored, and transmitted by its products is “completely” controlled by users.

The company said its security standards have been proven “again and again” worldwide, adding that it also offers a setting that allows users to turn off a drone’s internet connection and only store data locally.

The state-run Global Times commented on the statement, “Will all successful Chinese companies face pressure from the U.S.? CNN’s report makes us concerned with the tolerance level of the U.S.”

Nike, Adidas and other footwear giants have urged U.S. President Donald Trump to reconsider his tariffs on shoes made in China, saying the policy would be, quote “catastrophic for our consumers, our companies and the American economy as a whole,” Bloomberg reported.

In all, 173 companies signed an open letter to Trump, dated Monday and posted on the industry trade association’s website.

It was also sent to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow.

The group said, quote, “On behalf of our hundreds of millions of footwear consumers and hundreds of thousands of employees, we ask that you immediately stop this action to increase their tax burden.”

Last week, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office released a list of about 300 billion dollars worth of products that could see higher import duties, including all types of footwear, from sneakers to sandals.

Trump is expected to discuss the tariffs with Chinese President Xi Jinping next month.
