Energy Electrocatalysis: From Fundamentals To Devices
Submission deadline: 01 February 2026
Electrocatalysis plays a pivotal role in addressing global energy challenges by enabling efficient energy conversion and storage. As society transitions toward sustainable energy systems, advancements in electrocatalytic processes are critical for enhancing the performance and scalability of technologies such as water splitting, CO2 reduction, nitrogen fixation, fuel cells, and metal–air batteries. A comprehensive understanding of fundamental catalytic mechanisms, rational catalyst design, and their integration into practical devices is essential for accelerating progress in this field.

Special issue information:
The Journal of Energy Chemistry is planning to launch a special issue on Energy Electrocatalysis: From Fundamentals to Devices due to its increasingly important role. This special issue aims to collect original research and review articles covering the most recent advancements in bridging the gap between fundamental research and real-world applications. We invite contributions that explore novel electrocatalyst design, mechanistic insights, operando/in-situ characterization techniques, and system-level integration. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
-
Fundamental principles and reaction mechanisms of electrocatalysis;
-
Advances in nanostructured and single-atom electrocatalysts;
-
Electrochemical CO2 reduction, nitrogen reduction, water splitting and fuel cell-related reactions (i.e., hydrogen evolution reaction, hydrogen oxidation reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction);
-
Activity and durability of electrocatalysts in practical conditions;
-
Electrocatalytic device engineering and system integration.
