Samsung Electronics America and Cisco, together with Verizon, have successful deployed the first multi-vendor end-to-end 5G trial network in the field, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Verizon earlier announced plans to deliver the first 5G services to customers in specific markets by the middle of this year. Five US cities will begin trials in the second quarter, with pilot trials in a total of 11 markets expected by the middle of the year
.
The three companies followed a series of comprehensive network vendor interoperability tests (NVIOT); these demonstrated seamless interworking between core network, radio edge and user devices.
The Ann Arbor location was the first to tackle a multi-vendor deployment of 5G. The system includes a 5G virtualized packet core as part of the Cisco Ultra Services Platform with Cisco Advanced Services and Samsung virtual RAN solutions (vRAN), paired with Samsung’s 5G Radio base stations and 5G home routers that will deliver broadband services to Verizon’s trial customers.

Norwegian MVNO Chilimobil switches from Telenor to Telia
Norwegian MVNO Chilimobil said it is switching to the Telia network. In an excerpt from an interview on the Inside Telecom website, Chili CEO Lars Ryen Mill said it was impossible to make money on the Telenor Norway network.
In an announcement, Chili said it had spent six months reviewing its choice of supplier. It stated that Telia had won sixteen out of sixteen independent tests in the past year, named best mobile operator two years in a row, won the Tej.no coverage test and named Norway’s best 4G grid.
Chilimobil said joining Telia will give it access to new products and services. It is introducing data rollover at no extra cost. It will bring in mobile broadband, twin SIMs, a self-service app and enhanced Chili+ loyalty scheme. Customers will get a new SIM just after Easter (16 April 2017).
