从同情、怜悯或宗教信仰出发，对贫弱者以金钱或物品相助，或者提供其他一些实际援助的社会事业……其目的是为了做好事求善报；我不敢相信这是《中国大百科全书》的解释。但是，如果用英文原文讲，慈善是对人类的热爱；为增加人类的福利所做的努力。
美国为什么全民慈善，而且是有钱出钱、有力出力？在我们看来，这是个非常奇怪的事情。普通老百姓慈善捐款、做义工比例非常高。
75%的美国老百姓都捐款，30%是直接从工资里面扣掉的。而且，美国的义工数量达到总人口的57%，你总不能说这57%都是有钱人吧，而且平均每周工作4个小时，折算下来，他们所创造的价值和每年的慈善捐款一样多，这太可怕了。他们的动力哪里来的呢？据我们判断，是基督教精神。当然，我们谈基督教，只是就事论事，我只是非常中立地、实事求是地谈谈。我们认为这是美国宗教所推动的一种力量。我举个例子，美国90%的人自称相信上帝，美国国歌里有“上帝保佑美国”之类的词，总统就职的时候，要按着《圣经》发誓。甚至大家到法院去做证人的时候，也要先向《圣经》发誓。所有总统的演说的结尾都是“God Bless America”，就是“上帝保佑美国”的意思，而美元上面也印着“in God we trust”，就是“我们信任上帝”。钢铁大王卡耐基1889年在一个叫做《财富的福音》的书里面说“在巨富中死去是一种耻辱”。还有石油大王洛克菲勒也说“唯有奉献社会才能去除心中的自私，使得人类灵魂的伟大之处得到解放”。你要晓得，这些其实都是《圣经》里面一些话的翻版，你可以想象到《圣经》对他们影响有多大。Dear Max,Your mother and I don't yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future.
