In today’s fast-paced society and economy, it is vital that you actively work on your CV and already seek to improve it during your studies in order to increase the chances of getting an attractive and well-paid job upon graduating. Obviously, it is still very important to achieve good grades at the university. However, practical experiences have become just as necessary when thinking about persuasive and salient CVs nowadays. Most of the successful companies expect you to have a certain degree of practical experience. Therefore, this post aims at highlighting some options you can make use of in order to polish your personal CV.

Semester Abroad

A semester abroad definitely looks very good on your CV. It does not only boost your career, but also enables you to think out of the box, experience a different culture and meet interesting people from all over the world – this is how I managed to meet Lola by the way! :) Usually, your university should have a decent amount of partnerships with other universities, which you can make use of. Simply browse the website of your home university or inform yourself by visiting their international office. Since I already gained some experiences in the United States of America, I wanted to experience something completely different to my own culture and the American one. Luckily, my home university turned out to have a partnership with some schools in Shanghai and I was able to successfully apply for one of them.

Shanghai turned out to be so much more innovative, modern and technologically advanced to what I pictured it to be like before. The warm-heartedness and openness of the Chinese people was overwhelming and deeply impressed me. Although the language was definitely a problem in the beginning since I am not even close of being fluent in Chinese, it was always possible to work your way around that by using gestures and a lot of pointing. Eating dumplings and hot pot, discovering traditional Shanghainese and Cantonese food, learning how to eat with chopsticks, giving rice wine a try and spending countless hours looking at the beautiful skyline of Shanghai at night were experiences I’ll never forget. The semester abroad helped to broaden my horizon and I would love to return for work one day in the future. If you’re still struggling and hesitating to decide for a semester abroad, I can only motivate you – it’s definitely worth it and an experience, which I will never forget. Thank you so much for having me and for making my stay in China that incredible.

Internships

Internships are probably the most common and classical way on how to gain some practical experiences. They enable you to dip into a certain area of business, for instance logistics, marketing or human resources, providing you with detailed insights and thus also help you to find out whether a specific department sparks your interest in the long-term. Moreover, they help you to build and grow your personal network.

Personally, I’ve been doing several internships for Daimler AG, which is the German multinational company behind the famous brand of Mercedes-Benz. All of the internships were within different departments of logistics, providing me with interesting insights from the business world and enabling me to put some of the learned theory from university into practice. For instance, I was able to work within the departments of logistics process planning, production supply and program planning. These domestic internships also definitely boosted my motivation and showed me that I made the right decision by studying business administration with my major in Supply Chain Management and International Management.

There’s also always the possibility of doing an internship abroad. This is what I have done in between my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. On this way you can actually combine practical experience with gaining some valuable experience abroad. I went for the controlling department of Mercedes-Benz U.S. International in the state of Alabama in order to experience something besides logistics. I would never have thought before that I would have so much fun in a rather finance-based department. Looking back at the 7 months in the U.S., I can definitely say that it was one of the most exciting and interesting times of my life. Additionally, it helped me to improve my English substantially. Most of the bigger companies expect that you have already done an internship in your home country. Thus, your chances of getting accepted increase greatly if you already command some practical experience.

Write Your Final Thesis with A Company

I don’t know whether it is common in China that students seek to write their Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis along with a company – in Germany, it is getting more and more popular. Due to establishing some professional relationships during previous internships, I was offered to write my thesis with Daimler. The topic was all about re-designing the supply concept for a specific component of the convertible of the Mercedes-Benz E-class.

The major advantages of writing your thesis with a company consist of a more practically oriented topic, the possibility to actually create something which is relevant and of use for the company too, as well as being equipped with internal data, literature and information, which was very helpful for me back then. Moreover, you always have someone in the company to discuss your thoughts and the current state of the thesis with, since the company is really interested in your work too. This helped me a lot during the writing process as well. Additionally, you can generate some nice income as a side note, since most of the bigger companies pay you a salary for writing your thesis with them. Moreover, it’s really satisfying if your concept is actually being put into practice by the firm. On top of that, you might increase your personal chances of getting hired by the company if you have left a good overall impression.

Working Student

Once again, I can only speak about my own experiences that I have made in Germany, but over there it is quite common that students work as so-called working students for a limited amount of hours per week. The advantages are that you don’t need any additional side jobs because you’re already earning a decent amount of money besides studying. Once again, you get to put the learned theory from school into practice and you might also manage to gain a foothold in a company at a very early stage. Unless doing an internship, which is usually restricted to 3 to 6 months, the time as a working student can last much longer – in the best case for the entire duration of your studies. I have been working for a logistics service provider called Kühne + Nagel since the beginning of my Master’s degree. After some time, you really feel like becoming a stable part of the team and the more you contribute, the more responsibility you’re actually able to gain and the more interesting the projects get over time.

Student Assistant

Working as a student assistant for a specific chair at your university basically entails some of the advantages I have describes earlier within the working student paragraph. You’re able to benefit from some income, which is usually below the amount of money you can earn within a business though.

However, friends of mine who have been engaging in a position as a student assistant told me that this type usually enables slightly more flexibility and you do not have to work as many hours compared to the working student. If you are already quite fed up with your current studies, lacking free time to cooperate with a company, this might be an option for you, which is more realistic. On top of that, this type of engagement comes in quite handy if you plan on going for a PhD since you usually establish a relationship of trust with the professor you’re working for.
