Nowadays global solar electricity production is around 40 Gw and it is estimated to reach 50 Gw by 2020. Polycrystalline thin film solar cells such as CdTe and CIGS with an efficiency over 20%were fabricated. Recently, a novel material, Perovskite, has demonstrated an efficiency higher than 20%, despite it has some stability problems. The future of photovoltaics depends principally on solar cell efficiency, its cost and its stability. Concerning the cost, the grid parity is close to be obtained. It would be important to know the state of the art of Photovoltaics today and its trends for the future. For this reason Solar Energy is planning to publish two special issues focused on “Recent Progress in Photovoltaics”.

The title of the first issue is: Recent Progress in Photovoltaics, Part 1

The topics concerning Part 1 are:

Crystalline and Polycrystalline Silicon, Polycrystalline Thin Film Solar Cells ( Si, CIGS, CdTe, CZTS )

Reproducibility promotes trust within our society - in individual research findings, in researchers, and in science more broadly. It is key to the credibility of our field and the confidence in our research findings. Although breakthroughs and new discoveries provide important steps forward in our knowledge, replication studies give credibility to the research and help us identify results that are not strong enough to build on. Hence, replication is a vital part of the scientific process.

Same as other scientific fields, building is such a complex system involving multiple disciplines and numerous elements of dynamics and uncertainty. A great number of articles (over thousands) are published every year on different or similar buildings and systems, presenting similar or fully distinct (sometime opposite) conclusions. Although benchmarks are established for some typical cases, disparities are often observed due to the uncertainties in inputs, assumptions, and user skills.

Replication studies are rarely published because of the lack of a “breakthrough,” therefore drawing little recognition for the work in the form of citations, which tend to go to the original paper. There is also a perception that editors are not interested in replication studies, particularly those that confirm previous results.

Energy and Buildings, as one of the journals on Replication Studies Pilot effort initiated by Elsevier, will support valuing the reproducibility study and help build public trust in building science. As a result, Energy and Buildings will launch its first virtual special issue with a focus on Replication in Building Energy Simulation.

In this special issue, we will particularly welcome two types of papers, without excluding other forms of replication. The first type we would like to see replication of older but prominent research. Prominent papers would be ones that are frequently cited or used in the field. This type of paper would ask whether the old results stand up if newer data are added and methods are brought up to date. If not, why? At the core of this type of contribution would be a table with the original results, the best attempt at replication, and the results with additional data or alternative methods.

The second type of replication paper we would like to see takes a number of recent articles to check whether the results stand up if all the evidence is put together. For instance, different authors may have worked on the same case with different methods. Can the difference in findings be explained? Is there an objective way to distinguish between more and less credible results? Simulation studies often require validation against experimentation (either in laboratory or on field). Comparison and evaluation modeling input availability and experiment result accuracy are also of great interest and importance to the replication study.

Call for Papers: Special Issue on Distributed Event-Triggered Control, Estimation, and Optimization

Event-based systems have been widely studied in the past decade in which activities are triggered by events instead of time. This approach exhibits various advantages over traditional time-triggered approach in resource-constrained applications, such as improved communication bandwidth usages, reduced computational cost, and lower sensing/actuation frequencies. As the modern systems become more and more complex, event-triggered approaches are often implemented in a distributed manner, where events are generated only based on local information. On one hand, it can significantly reduce the heavy burden on communication and computation compared with centralized approaches. On the other hand, it raises unique challenges with respect to event design, implementation, and system analysis.

The aim of this special issue is to capture the latest advances in the theories and applications of event-triggered estimation, control, and optimization in networked and distributed control systems. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following research areas:

- Modeling of distributed event-based systems;

- Event-based cooperative control ofmulti-agent systems;

- Event-triggering in distributed estimation of complex networks;

- Distributed event-triggered optimization of networked systems;

- Applications to cyber physical systems

The proposed issue focuses on the role of ventilation to achieve thermal comfort and indoor air quality in low energy, nearly zero energy and positive energy buildings. It aims to present recent developments on advanced ventilation technologies and design strategies which will contribute to the provision of a healthy and comfortable internal environment in buildings whilst using no or very low amounts of energy. Ventilation technologies could be natural, mechanical or hybrid, addressing the removal of overheating risk, moisture build-up risks (usually in residential buildings), control of internal pollutants and the ingression of external pollutants.
