A
trainer at our gym, a big, sweet guy with two boys, a 13 year old and a 2 year
old. His wife just died after an 8 month ordeal fighting cancer at age 43.
Until the end, our trainer really didn’t believe he might lose his wife.
On Friday, he was back in the gym trying to do a workout of his own to take his
mind off the grief and start to make his way back into a new reality. Good
timing put us together for an extended 45 minute heart to heart.
Our intimate talk included the difficult awkwardness others have dealing with a
grieving person or with illness, trying to help by offering their miracle
healers, the best doctors, Gurus and books, all well-meaning. He then said:
“I’ll tell you the one book that has made the most difference is “Getting
Things Done”.
This was surprising in this context, and I asked how so. He said that he’s a
great 80% completion kind of guy, that his wife was always the implementer who
got it finished and done. After her death he told a friend that he didn’t know
how he was going to manage without that gift of his wife supporting him, let
alone now as a single father of 2. The friend recommended Getting Things Done.
He’s found great solace in its wisdom.
Isn’t it amazing that you have helped someone with that kind of loss, because
you have shown him a way to quiet the noise and make the unimaginable livable.
