美元的升值似乎令人期待，但不要忽视美元在全球金融中扮演的重要角色。

The mighty dollor 中，mighty 指“强大的”，相当于 powerful, strong, robust, muscular 等，其名词形式为 might，力量，比如 military might 军事力量。

T he rise of the greenback 指“美元的升值”，greenback 指“美元”，因为美元的背面是绿色的，所以可以用"greenback"代指“美元”。BTW，美元在南北战争期间也被称为“绿背票”。The rise of the greenback 就是指“美元的升值”，与其相对应的“贬值”则可以说"the drop/slide of the greenback"，此外，表示美元升值还可以用 revalue, appreciate，对应的名词形式为 revaluation, appreciation，在此给大家拓展一下，表示“货币贬值”时可以用 devalue, depreciate，不过它俩略有不同，devalue 指购买力下降的的那种贬值，而depreciate 特指兑换率下降的那种贬值。

That is to ignore... 这句话，里面暗含一个词组，The dollar plays a central role in global finance, play a role in 指“在某方面扮演角色、起到一定作用”。引言部分是说，如果你认为美元升值是好事情， 那你就忽视了美元在全球金融中扮演的重要角色。暗含之意是，美元的升值会对全球金融带来不利的影响。

THE world's most important currency is flexing its muscles. In the three weeks following Donald Trump's victory in America's presidential elections, the dollar had one of its sharpest rises ever against a basket of rich-country peers. It is now 40% above its lows in 2011. It has strengthened relative to emerging-market currencies, too. The yuan has fallen to its lowest level against the dollar since 2008; anxious Chinese officials are said to be pondering tighter restrictions on foreign takeovers by domestic firms to stem the downward pressure. India, which has troubles of its own making, has seen its currency reach an all-time low against the greenback. Other Asian currencies have plunged to depths not seen since the financial crisis of 1997-98.

第一句，本段的主旨句，开门见山，讲述美元强劲的现象，一起来看：

这句话并不难理解，着重讲一下 flex its muscles ，它的英文解释是：to try to worry an opponent by publicly showing military, political or financial power. 即，（透过军事、政治或经济实力的展示向对手）显示实力，展示力量。它的名词和形容词形式为 muscle-flexing，武力炫耀；武力威胁，《经济学人》今年11月19日那期中有一篇关于巴尔干半岛局势的分析，里面有这么一句话：

惮于俄罗斯的武力威胁，这一地区（指巴尔干半岛）的穆斯林开始求助土耳其总统。

下面则介绍美元兑发达国家货币升值这一情况，一起来看：

前半句好理解，交代了时间：在特朗普赢得美国总统大选后三周的时间里。following 在之前讲过，相当于 after，也可以用 ensuing, in the wake of（后面加不好的事情）代替，以后在写作中可以多注意一下，当提笔写 after 时，先冷静下来想一想，可不可以用其它词汇代替。虽然这只是小地方，但能极大地提高写作水平。

介词 against 在这里注意一下，它表示“兑”，比如，人民币兑美元汇率，RMB exchange rate against USD，当然也可以把"against"换成介词"to"，比如，exchange rate of RMB to USD。

a basket of，之前虽然没讲过这个搭配，但讲过这个用法，a+n.+of 或 n.s+of 可以表示“很多”，比如 a shoal of fish，即使你不知道"shoal"是什么意思，但看到"a shoal of"这一结构，就完全可以确定它表示“很多”这一概念。

peer 此处代指"currency"，其本意指“身份（或地位）相同的人”，但后来用法逐渐拓宽，现在可以泛指“性质、功能相同的人或物”，在今后的表达中可以注意这一用法，正确地使用"peer"可以很好的避免重复。相类似的还有"equivalent""counterpart"等，今后遇到的时候会详讲，大家此处可以先做好笔记。
