The Zhao group at the Interdisciplinary Division of Biomedical Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is currently looking for prospective PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting students/researchers.
Dr. Xin Zhao has been appointed as an assistant professor at the Division of Biomedical Engineering, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and her position will start from Dec. 19, 2016. She received her MSc with Distinction in Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London, UK in 2006 and PhD in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering from University College London, UK in 2010. From 2012-2015, Dr. Zhao worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University, Harvard-MIT Health Science & Technology (HST) and School of Engineering of Applied Science (SEAS). From 2015-2016, she worked as an associate professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University. Dr. Zhao is dedicated to interdisciplinary research involving topics such as biomaterials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, cell micro-environment and microfluidics. She uses multi-disciplinary approach including material science, nanotechnology, cell biology, molecular biology and microfluidics to generate tissue-engineered organs and controlling cell behaviors for addressing clinical problems. So far, she has published over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and applied for 2 national patents. Her work has been published in leading journals of the biomaterials field such as Advanced Functional Materials, Maters Today, Biomaterials, Small, etc.

Dr. Zhao strives to provide a stimulating environment with exciting and frontier research topics and excellent colleagues where the candidates can be trained to become outstanding independent researchers, with sufficient freedom to explore their own ideas while working on well-designed projects. An ideal PhD candidate should have a degree in Material Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or any related field. With outstanding academic records (preferable with research publications). Candidates interested in the opening should send the full CV, IELTS or TOEFL scores, transcripts, and the contact information of 2-3 references to [email protected]. The positions remain open until filled. Candidates are also encouraged to explore fellowship opportunities at PolyU (http://www.polyu.edu.hk/ro/e-pro ... .html#.WASceI9OJmA) or other fellowships, such as the HK government PhD fellowship (http://www.rgc.edu.hk/hkphd), which, if granted, will significantly increase the chance of getting admitted.
Three research projects are ongoing. One project is to develop novel mesoporous silica nanoparticles for long term drug release with the ultimate goal of disease treatment such as prevention of scar formation and tendon adhesion. One project is to develop synthetic, targeted DNA/SiRNA/miRNA delivery systems for disease treatment like cancer. Another project focuses on 3D printing of synthetic photocrosslinkable polymers for bone regeneration. We are looking for postdoctoral fellows with expertise in polymer chemistry, material science, medicine, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering. Candidates with prior experience in small animal surgery and grant application are preferred. Postdoctoral candidates should also send three representative publications to be considered. PolyU is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer with a strong commitment to diversity that provides competitive salary with health benefits.
