Downtime 是本周《经济学人》（2025年1月4日刊）标题为“Young customers in developing countries propel a boom in plastic surgery”一文中出现的一个单词：

Cheaper procedures with less downtime are making cosmetic treatments accessible to a broader audience.

从拼写上来看，不难发现 downtime 就是由熟词 down + time 双拼而来。而从词源上来看，该词最早出现于1928年，也作 down-time 使用，其中的 down 取其形容词含义“停机的、停止运行的”而来，比如：

那么 downtime 的本义便是指机器、设备、工厂等因安装、设置、检修、维修、原材料短缺等原因而造成的不生产或无法使用的“停工期、窝工时间”。比如：

在短暂的收获季节，农民对窝工时间尤其敏感。
Farmers are especially sensitive to downtime during the short harvest season .
更多的停机时间只会意味着更高的负面财务影响、不满的客户以及糟糕的声誉。
