The successful applicant is a scholar ofinternational repute (F/M) with a clear overview of and insight into the roleand functioning of law and legal systems in the Global South and how theyinteract with their societal context. She/he has ample experience withinterdisciplinary research on the national and local level in the Global Southand is familiar with development policies. Through case studies and countrystudies the chair group aggregates knowledge and contributes to developingtheory on the role of law in its relation to governance and development. TheVan Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society (VVI) has a strongreputation and research tradition in this field, combining legal and bothqualitative and quantitative empirical research methods. The professor to beappointed will build upon this existing tradition as well as contribute to thefurther development of the VVI, which has recently broadened its scope fromfocusing solely on the Global South to also focusing on (Northern) Europe. Theresearch of the chair group is embedded in one of the Law School’s faculty wideresearch programmes, entitled 'Effective Protection of Fundamental Rights in aPluralist World’.
The successful applicant will contribute tothe teaching programme of the VVI through lecturing courses at the Leiden LawSchool and Leiden University College. She/he will actively be involved in thedevelopment of new teaching modules including a possible Masters programme‘Law, Governance and Society’, and will furthermore contribute to the trainingof policymakers and academics in the Global South.
The professor to be appointed is anacademic leader with strong organizational and communication skills. She/hechairs a group of around twenty persons – including PhD candidates – in closecollaboration with the other members of the departmental management. She/heactively participates in (international) networks in academia, policy, andpractice, including in the field of Rule of Law promotion. She/he will have awell-established track record in obtaining research funding and will startvarious initiatives to acquire new external (research) funding. The successfulapplicant has a firm and realistic ambition to further strengthen the positionof the VVI within the University, in The Netherlands as well as abroad.

Ph.D. degree in Social Sciences and/or Law directly relevant toVVI’s academic domain and approach;

Excellent knowledge of and a clear vision on Law, Governance andDevelopment as well as experience with empirical research into law and thefunctioning of legal institutions and actors in the Global South;

Broad vision on, and ambition to contribute to, the development oftheory in the fields of law and development, and law and society/socio-legal studies;

Vision, leadership qualities and an academic entrepreneurial spirit;

Excellent publication record commensurate with career stage,including international publications in peer-reviewed journals and publicationsfor a wider public;

Experience with Ph.D. and research supervision;

Experience with the acquisition of external research grants and thecoaching of others in obtaining these grants;

Experience with the societal dissemination and utilization ofresearch results;

Excellent communication and organisational skills;

Extensive experience and affinity with teaching and coordinatingcourses;

Active participation in several internationals networks in academiaand practice;

Extensive language skills, including an excellent command ofEnglish. If the successful applicant is not Dutch-speaking, s/he is expected toacquire a good command of Dutch shortly;

Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the UniversityTeaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not alreadypossess this qualification or its equivalent, s/he must be willing to obtainthis Qualification within two years.

The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law,Governance and Society (VVI) is part of the Leiden Law School. The VVI seeks toadvance knowledge of the formation and functioning of legal systems in theirsocial contexts, the impact of these systems on society and vice versa, theireffectiveness in governance, and their contribution to development.
The Institute adopts a socio-legal andglobal approach, doing research on law in the books and law in action in Asia(notably Indonesia, China), Africa, the Middle East, and (Northern) Europe. VVIstaff teaches several socio-legal thematic and regional courses for both Dutchand foreign exchange students. Initial period of employment in thisposition is for 5 years, with the possibility of renewal based on need, fundingand performance. Salary is in accordance with the cao (Collective LabourAgreement for Dutch universities) and is dependent on the candidate’sexperience. Gross monthly salary is minimum € 5,260.- and maximum € 7,659.-(salary scale H2, on fulltime basis).
