The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) has introduced four key measures to protect Korean technologies from leakage. First, KIPO is now designated as a counterintelligence agency, working with six other agencies to prevent industrial espionage. Second, KIPO will leverage its extensive expertise and vast patent data to identify and protect targeted core technologies, sharing findings with the national Counterintelligence Information Center. Third, the scope of KIPO’s investigative powers has been expanded to cover all trade secret infringement crimes. Fourth, KIPO introduces stricter penalties, including longer sentences and higher punitive damages, to deter technology theft, alongside new laws targeting brokers of trade secret leaks by retirees.

Germany bans Lenovo’s products over patent infringement

The regional German court has ruled that Chinese tech company Lenovo and its subsidiary Motorola infringed on the patent rights of US firm InterDigital. The court in Munich prohibited both companies from selling devices supporting 4G/5G networks (smartphones and tablets) across Germany. InterDigital said it had hoped to provide licensing on FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) terms, but said Lenovo failed to comply. “Following the court’s finding that Lenovo’s behavior constitutes a hold-out, we hope Lenovo reverses course and finally takes a fair and reasonable license,” commented Josh Schmidt, the Chief Legal Officer of InterDigital.

Shopify sues JOYY unit for copyright infringement

Shopify

Canadian e-commerce provider Shopify sued a subsidiary of Chinese technology company JOYY Inc in New York federal court on Tuesday, accusing it of illegally copying Shopify's software to build its own e-commerce platform. Shopify said in the lawsuit that JOYY's Shopline created a knockoff of its Dawn storefront-template technology to power competing e-commerce services. Shopify also told the court that merchants using Shopline's software violate its rights. Shopify asked the court for an unspecified amount of money damages and a court order blocking the alleged infringement.

Rumble sues Google for anticompetitive digital advertising practices, claiming for over $1 billion

Rumble

Video-sharing platform Rumble said on Monday it has sued Google, arguing the tech giant has engaged in anticompetitive practices across its digital advertising products and sought damages in excess of $1 billion. The suit alleges Google has monopolized the ad stack by buying companies up and down the chain. Rumble has accused Google of maintaining its monopoly by reaching an agreement with Meta's Facebook to prevent Facebook from offering alternatives to Google's ad tech ecosystem. Google denied Rumble's claims calling them "simply wrong" and said that Rumble utilizes "dozens" of competing ad services in addition to Google's ad manager.

Dell, Caltech reach settlement over Wi-Fi patents

The California Institute of Technology and Dell told a Texas federal court that they have agreed to resolve Caltech's lawsuit claiming Dell infringes the school's patents covering wireless-communications technology. Caltech and Dell said in a court filing with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas on Tuesday that they would dismiss the case, ending a string of high-stakes Caltech patent lawsuits against tech companies over Wi-Fi chips. Caltech previously won a $1.1 billion jury verdict against Apple and Broadcom in a dispute over some of the same patents, though a U.S. appeals court later ordered a retrial on the damages amount. The university has since settled that case as well as related lawsuits against Samsung, Microsoft, and HP.

Panasonic Corporation of North America allegedly infringed a patent for an in-vehicle GPS system that warns drivers if they’re about to hit something, according to a new lawsuit. New Mexico-based Navog LLC filed a complaint in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas Wednesday alleging infringement of US Patent 10,593,205. The patent, issued in March 2020, describes a method for programming a vehicle GPS to warn truckers, bus, and RV drivers that there is insufficient vehicle clearance for “approaching underpasses, bridges, viaducts, tunnels, and other structures.” Navog LLC said in the lawsuit that Panasonic’s touchscreen vehicle GPS and “info-tainment” product uses its patented technology. Meta settles trademark lawsuit with Metacapital

Meta Platforms has resolved a trademark lawsuit filed by investment firm Metacapital Management over the tech giant's name change from Facebook. Meta and Metacapital said in a court filing that they had agreed to a settlement in principle and asked the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to pause the case while they finalize the agreement. Meta Platforms rebranded from Facebook in October 2021. It applied to register "Meta" trademarks in 2022 related to financial services including investment management. New York-based Metacapital sued later that year. Metacapital said Meta's name change would cause consumer confusion and requested damages of at least $60 million. Meta is facing other trademark lawsuits over its name change from virtual-reality company MetaX and tech-services provider Metabyte.
