When this ‘I’ shall die

“When this ‘I’ shall die,” the Master once said, “then shall I know who am I. You must forget yourselves and any worries you have about your own importance. Tell yourselves always, ‘Thou, Lord, only Thou!’ God is dreaming through you. He is the sole reality.”

——from Conversations with Yogananda

It’s only just begun

Master said to me once, ”Remember you won’t be completely free, until you have attained nirbikalpa Samadhi.” Complete freedom from the ego, complete freedom from delusion, but then he said,”Then the real work begins.”

In fact one disciple of  Ramakrishna said, ”I used to think that once you've attained nirbikalpa Samadhi, the work is finished.” He said, “It’s only just begun." Hehe, it’s no joke?

——My Life with Paramhansa Yogananda - Swami Kriyananda - Sep 29 2009

That final liberation is usually attained from higher astral worlds

“Very few saints, even,” the Master once told me,“have attained final liberation.”

I exclaimed in dismay, “What about all those saints in the Autobiography ? Are all of them dead and gone, with no one to take their place?”

(In Autobiography of a Yogi , Paramhansa Yogananda makes it clear that final liberation is usually attained from higher astral worlds, not from this material plane. It seemed to me at the time, however, that that goal must be virtually impossible of attainment.)

“Very few even of those saints,” he replied, “were fully liberated.”

I named a few of them specifically from his book. In each case, his reply was, “No.” At last he said, “Only Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, Sri Yukteswarji, and two of Lahiri Mahasaya’s disciples: Swami Pranabananda [the “Saint with Two Bodies” as he is described in the Auto- biography] and Ram Gopal Muzumdar [the “Sleepless Saint”].” On the occasion I quote here he didn’t name himself. At other times, however, he told us he had come into this body fully liberated.

——from Conversations with Yogananda

I am aiding advanced beings to rid themselves of astral karma andthus attain liberation from astral rebirths

Deathless guru, tell me more!

Master gave a quick, mirthfulchuckle. Please, dear one, he said, won t you relax your hold a little?

Only a little! I had been embracing him with an octopus grip. I could detect the samefaint, fragrant, natural odor that had been characteristic of his body before. The thrilling touch of his divine flesh still persists around the inner sidesof my arms and in my palms whenever I recall those glorious hours.

As prophets are sent on earthto help men work out their physical karma, so I have been directed by God toserve on an astral planet as a savior, Sri Yukteswar explained. It is called Hiranyaloka or Illumined Astral Planet. There I am aiding advanced beings to rid themselves of astral karma andthus attain liberation from astral rebirths. The dwellers on Hiranyaloka arehighly developed spiritually; all of them had acquired, in their lastearth-incarnation, the meditation-given power of consciously leaving theirphysical bodies at death. No one can enter Hiranyaloka unless he has passed onearth beyond the state of sabikalpasamadhi into the higher state of nirbikalpasamad hi . 1

Hiranyaloka inhabitants havealready passed through the ordinary astral spheres, where nearly all beingsfrom earth must go at death; there they destroyed many seeds of karma connectedwith their past actions in the astral worlds. None but advanced beings canperform such redemptive work effectively in the astral spheres. 2 Then, in order to free their souls fully from all traces of astral karma, theseaspirants were drawn by cosmic law to be reborn with new astral bodies onHiranyaloka, the astral sun or heaven, where I am present to help them. Thereare also nearly perfect being on Hiranyaloka who have come from the superior causalworld.

My mind was now in such perfectattunement with my guru s that he was conveying hisword-pictures to me partly by speech and partly by thought-transference. I wasthus quickly receiving his idea-tabloids.

You have read in thescriptures, Master went on, that God encased the human soul successively in three bodies the idea, or causal, body; the subtle astral body, seat of man s mental and emotional natures; and the gross physical body. On earth aman is equipped with his physical senses. An astral being works with hisconsciousness and feelings and a body made of lifetrons. 3 A causal-bodied being remainsin the blissful realm of ideas. My work is with those astral beings who are preparingto enter the causal world.

  1. The sanskrit word bikalpa means "difference, nonidentity." Sabikalpa is the state of samadhi "with difference," nirbikalpa is the state "without difference." That is, in sabikalpa samadhi the devotee still retains a slight feeling of separateness from God; in nirbikalpa samadhi he realizes fully his identity as Spirit.

In sabikalpa samadhi the devotee has attained realization of hisoneness with Spirit but cannot maintain his cosmic consciousness except in the immobile trance state. By continuous meditation, he reaches thesuperior state of nirbikalpa samadhi, in which he may move freely in theworld and performs his outward duties without any loss of God-perception.

In nirbikalpa samadhi the yogi dissolve the last vestiges of hismaterial or earthly karma. Nevertheless, he may still have certain astral andcausal karma to work out, and therefor take astral and then causalreembodiments on high-vibrational spheres.

  2. Because most persons, enjoying thebeauty of the astral worlds, do not see any neccessity for strenuous spiritual effort.

  3. Sri Yukteswarused the word prana ; I have translated it as lifetrons. The Hinduscriptures refer not only to the anu, “atom,” and to the paramanu, “beyond the atom,” finer electronic energies; but also to prana, “creative lifetronic force.” Atoms and electrons are blind forces; prana is inherently intelligent. The pranic lifetrons in the spermatozoa and ova, forinstance, guide the developent of the embryo according to a karmic design.
