With a proud history spanning over 117 years, Tongji University is one of the earliest national universities in China directly administered by the Ministry of Education (MOE), and is jointly supported by the Shanghai municipal government. Throughout its remarkable development, Tongji has grown into a distinctive, influential, and research-oriented institution with a strong international presence. At present, Tongji University consists of 30 academic colleges, 12 affiliated hospitals, and 12 affiliated primary and secondary schools. The university operates across four main campuses—Siping, Jiading, Huxi, and Hubei—and also has research bases in Lingang and Zhangjiang. Covering approximately 2.59 square kilometers, the university boasts over 1.95 million square meters of building space, with a library collection exceeding 4.63 million volumes.
Tongji’s academic disciplines span 11 categories, including engineering, science, medicine, management, economics, philosophy, literature, law, education, arts, and interdisciplinary studies. The university offers 73 undergraduate programs, 44 first-level master’s degree programs, 29 professional master’s degrees, 36 first-level doctoral programs, 11 professional doctoral programs, and 35 postdoctoral research stations. It also has six outstanding student training bases in key disciplines.
Tongji University is home to 6 national or domestic key laboratories, 1 national major scientific and technological infrastructure, 1 national collaborative innovation center, 1 national large-scale scientific instrument center, 1 national industrial metrology test center, 6 national engineering research centers, and 1 national science and technology resource-sharing service platform. Additionally, it houses 4 other national-level research platforms and 110 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms. The university has been recognized as the Ministry of Science and Technology's National Innovation Talent Training Demonstration Base and is approved as a National Science Popularization Education Base.
Tongji University has also established world-class research platforms, including the world's largest Multi-Functional Shaking Table Center, the first Automotive Wind Tunnel Center, the first Comprehensive Test Platform for Urban Rail Transit, the pioneering National Long-term Seabed Observatory System, the National Key Laboratory of Autonomous Intelligent Unmanned Systems, and the Ministry of Education's Center for Frontier Science of Cell Stem and Fate Editing.
The university has undertaken major national projects and research initiatives, yielding groundbreaking results in fields such as large-span bridge technology, structural seismic disaster prevention, remote sensing and spatial information, intelligent urban traffic systems, greenhouse technology, new energy vehicles, urban sewage treatment, ocean drilling, and molecular genetics of atrial fibrillation.
