Dr. Boarhead’s Summary of Global Updates on the 2019 Novel Coronavirus: 7 March 2021

1. Journal of the American Medical Association : An association was identified between SARS-CoV-2 infection and going to restaurants, bars, or coffee shops. In contrast, attending school or child care was not associated with positive test results, suggesting that risk may have been mitigated through regular mask use by staff and children along with other safety measures in the facilities. <22 Feb.>

2. Lancet : Individuals with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection generate strong humoral and cellular responses to one dose of BNT162b2 vaccine, with evidence of high titers of in vitro live virus neutralization. In contrast, most infection-naive individuals generate both weak T-cell responses and low titers of neutralizing antibodies. <25 Feb.>

[key info] BNT162b2 proves to be more effective for previously infected people.

3. New England Journal of Medicine : For patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the use of dexamethasone resulted in lower 28-day mortality among those receiving either invasive mechanical ventilation or oxygen alone at randomization but not among those receiving no respiratory support. <25 Feb.>

[key info] Dexamethasone may contribute to lower mortality among hospitalized patients who receive respiratory support.

4. Journal of the American Medical Association : A total of 11,782 COVID-19 patients were included in a meta-analysis. Compared with the control group, treatment with convalescent plasma was not associated with improved survival or other positive clinical outcomes. <27 Feb.>

5. Nature : The prospect of reduced vaccine potency against fast-spreading SARS-CoV-2 variants has spurred a global rush to increase genomic surveillance of the coronavirus. These genomes could theoretically help to understand the spread of the virus through communities and across the globe, but in practice, such analyses reveal much less than they might. <1 Mar.>

6. BBC: US regulators have formally approved the single-shot Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine, which is set to be a cost-effective alternative to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and can be stored in a refrigerator instead of a freezer. Trials found it prevented serious illness but was only 66% effective overall when moderate cases were included. <1 Mar.>

[key info] The J&J vaccine is less effective than Pfizer’s and Moderna’s but more convenient for storage.
