老外认为在高中应该学但没教的几件事
1.personal finances
We tend to learn from habit. Since people tend to take the path of least resistance, their financial knowledge is based on emotional decisions, rather than a rational approach.
2.How to learn independently
Maybe the biggest shortcoming, because you are taught in schools to listen passively and learn from a teacher rather than create knowledge for yourself.
3.Trades
Schools are so focused on book knowledge that they have stigmatized almost any job that does not involve sitting behind a computer. Thus, schools no longer teach mechanics, sewing, cooking, and a multitude of useful life skills any more.
4.Usable Mathematics
I'm not saying the math we’re learning now isn't going to be useful someday. However, I don't see the practicality of the application of log23 - log 3 = x when most high school kids don't even know how taxes work, or how to plan a budget.
5. Practical Science
Take Med Students for example, you learn all those ‘important’ facts in Biology and Chemistry, but relearn everything again in college/university.
Meanwhile, most high schoolers don't know how to treat basic illnesses like colds and flu, food poisoning, or cuts and scratches. They don't know what to do if someone is poisoned, or to make sure their diets are healthy and contain all the nutrients they need. They don't even know what the ingredients in their food (like sulfur dioxide, and fructose syrup) really are. But they definitely know that red blood cells don't have nuclei, and that ethyl ethanoate smells fruity. Because that's just so important!
6.Self-defense Classes
I believe this is one of the most important. I'm not talking about karate or intensive martial arts training, but learning how to defend yourself and the right action to take when confronted by potentially dangerous situations may very literally save your life one day.
