“内卷”是这两年被频繁讨论的一个词，现在也有越来越多的人意识到它带来的危害。
最近很多政府文件提出要整治内卷问题，一些企业也开始采取行动。比如包括大疆和美的在内的大公司正在推行“晚上9点强制下班”，减少无意义的加班行为。
那么“内卷”如何翻译呢？之前不少外媒将它译为involution，这个词意思相当于an inward curvature or penetration，即“向内卷曲”。
但它很难准确表达“内卷”的真正含义：同行间竞相付出更多努力以争夺有限资源，结果导致所有人的收益都在下跌，即“卷到最后一无所有”。
最近我看新加坡《海峡时报》的文章，里面出现了一个不错的译法：
‘race-to-the-bottom’ competition
原文标题是：China takes aim at ‘race-to-the-bottom’ competition（中国在破解“内卷式”竞争困境）
其中，a/the race to the bottom是一个社会经济学名词，Farlex Dictionary of Idioms对它的解释是：
A situation in which striving to have the lowest possible prices in order to attract the highest number of customers also drives down standards of the product or service, worsens conditions for workers in the industry, and ultimately leads to problems for everyone.
可以看到，短语指的是公司为了吸引更多顾客而努力降低价格。这导致产品和服务质量下滑，员工待遇降低，最终所有人都没有好结果。这非常符合“内卷”的定义。
标题里面race-to-the-bottom是作为形容词词组使用，race-to-the-bottom competition就是“内卷式竞争”。
这篇文章正文还有这样的句子：
The Chinese government is getting serious about reining in a form of cut-throat competition that has seen companies
race one another to the bottom
– and out of business.
翻译：中国政府正在认真治理一类残酷的竞争模式，这种竞争导致公司之间相互内卷，甚至倒闭。
rein in something是一个词组，意思是“控制，约束”。
cut-throat competition是一个外刊里面经常出现的说法，用来指“残酷无情的竞争，你死我活的竞争”。它的程度比fierce competition更重。
从这一句里面我们还可以学到“互相内卷”的译法：race one another to the bottom，其中race在这里是一个动词。
此外，也可以用the rat race来指“内卷”。比如《南华早报》最近在报道“强制下班”的文章中有这样的句子：
The move, which followed recent vows from the government to crack down on China’s relentless
rat race
, has led to heated discussion online and off.
其中the rat race是一个固定短语，据说它来源于上世纪30年代的美国。那时候人们用the rat race来指城市中的老鼠每天为食物奔波的场景。
后来人们就用该短语来指“永无休止的激烈竞争”，并且这种竞争是有害的。
一个常见的搭配是get out of / quit the rat race，比如：She is quitting the rat race to spend time with her family.
