So-called fake foreigners have emerged on social media platforms, posing as TikTok refugees to deceive young women and share inappropriate content, sparking widespread concern.As hundreds of thousands of foreign users join RedNote, the platform has experienced a surge in cross-cultural interactions.In the two days leading up to January 14, RedNote gained over 700,000 new users. RedNote is also known as Xiaohongshu in ChinaPosts by foreign people often attract thousands of warm, welcoming comments from Chinese netizens.However, some malicious Chinese users have taken advantage of the trend by using artificial intelligence (AI) generated or stolen photos of Western faces to impersonate foreigners.A female user reported receiving multiple harassing messages from such imposters.▲RedNote has been flooded with foreigners amid an on-off banning saga involving the TikTok platform. Photo: BaiduShe said that the accounts featured foreign face pictures, Western names, and IP locations set to the United States.RedNote’s IP location feature, designed to boost transparency and authenticity, displays the user’s geographic location when they post.The woman said: “They all asked me in Chinese if I wanted to date them, claiming it was for ‘lasting China-US friendship’.” “They claim to be foreigners, but their Chinese is far better than their English,” she said, adding that she has reported the fake foreign users.Media reports reveal that most of these “foreigners’” accounts are run by Chinese men, with some operating as organised professional teams.According to Entertainment Capital, insider information showed that one AI-generated account, depicting a foreign girl, amassed up to 12,000 followers.Some accounts impersonate NBA basketball players to draw traffic, reposting content from foreign social media platforms without permission.Others use photos of attractive Western individuals to entice young Chinese users into romantic relationships, even persuading them to share explicit images.A woman surnamed Wang from eastern China’s Zhejiang province nearly fell victim to a scam after meeting a “British boyfriend” online. As their relationship “progressed”, the man offered to send her cash to help her buy a house in China.Wang later received a fake message, stating that the cash parcel had arrived but required a 25,500-yuan (US$3,500) “customs fee”. Police contacted her and revealed the scam just in time.In another case, a man called John, claiming to be from the Middle East, sweet-talked a woman into transferring tens of thousands of yuan for a supposed business deal.The police say that “fake foreigners” often use simple English with frequent grammatical errors, and scam groups may show inconsistent language styles.

To tackle the scourge, RedNote has intercepted about 2.4 million risky private messages and is urgently recruiting English-speaking staff.On January 16, Li Liang, Vice-President of Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, warned users that an overseas IP does not necessarily mean the account is registered abroad.
