Welcome to the English Language Teaching Seminar jointly held by U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou and Regional English Language Office of U.S. Embassy Beijing on Saturday, December 28, 2019 in Sanya, Hainan province. This event is free and open to English language teachers, researchers, and pre-service teachers, but all other event-related expenses will need to be covered by the participants.

9:30-10:30 Plenary – Motivation Moments—Heidi Healy
Motivation is important in language learning and yet it is difficult to motivate students, especially in an EFL setting where students are required to take English classes. In this workshop the presenter will discuss 4 aspects of class design that teachers can use to increase motivation in their classrooms. These four aspects include instructional design, learner autonomy, classroom environment and culture and teacher behaviors.

Room 1: Motivating by Integrating Arts—Paula Adams
In this interactive workshop, teachers will learn how to use the power of portraits to motivate their students to expand their vocabulary, activate their imagination and logic, and build an appreciation of art as “historical” social media.
Room 2: Motivating through Assessment—Ginelle Hanaway
CATs or Classroom Assessment Techniques are formative and used on an ongoing basis and provide the teacher with feedback about student learning. This workshop introduces the idea of CATs and how to use them. They can inform and motivate teachers and students throughout the learning process.

Room 1: Motivating with Tools for Learning—Sarah Buckalew & Shushan Richardson
Graphic Organizers are effective tools for motivating learners. They give a visual representation of the relationship of information. They can be successfully used across the language learning skills. This workshop will look at a number of graphic organizers.
Room 2: Motivating with Authentic Listening Materials—Selene Baltazar
Unscripted audio and videos as supplementary tools can add an interesting layer to speaking and/or listening courses. This workshop will introduce a successful way to implement a task-based listening activity that the students will be motivated to continue doing beyond class time.
