Immigration officers at the Liantang Port in Shenzhen, southern China's Guangdong Province, reported on March 31 that they intercepted a lady who attempted to cross the border using her twin sister's travel card and citizen's identity card.
The National Immigration Administration published the report on social media today, noting that her behavior constituted crossing the border illegally, and she was slapped with an administrative penalty, while the travel documents were confiscated per the law.
Many people expressed disbelief that such incidents still take place in the age of advanced technology and under professionally trained immigration officers, however, the incidents are not as rare as perceived.
"Even twins can't escape the hand of the law. Border protection officers are very professional! This is a very risky operation, don't cross the red line." Commented a travel blogger from Guizhou Province.
In early February this year, the National Immigration Administration reported two real-life cases involving twins who were caught attempting to use their twin sibling's travel documents to cross the border.
In one of the cases, Ms. Wang had agreed with her friends to travel together to Macau by the end of November last year. However, as the day approached, she noticed that she did not have an endorsement on her travel pass and decided to use her twin sister's travel documents.
She chose a self-service fast channel to clear border inspection at the Shekou Port but was stuck during identity verification, attracting the attention of border inspection officers who decided to conduct further inspection to clear her identity.

Wang presented "her" identity card and travel pass along with the proof of endorsement. However, the officers found that she was also carrying another identity card.

Although the two cards were genuine, and the pictures of the holders on the two cards were eerily similar, they had different names but the same surname.

A further investigation revealed that Wang had a twin sister and the border inspection officers suspected that she was using her twin sister's travel documents.

Wang finally confirmed their suspicion and admitted to the wrongdoing.

She was detained for seven days and had her twin sister's travel documents confiscated, per the law.

In the second case, immigration officers intercepted an individual who chose a manual clearance channel and kept pressuring the immigration officer to let her in quickly as she was in a hurry.

The officer asked her if she had something stuck on her face, to which she replied that it was just a mole. This was enough for the officer to confirm that she was using someone else's travel documents.

That's because although the picture of the person on the travel document looked exactly like her, there was no mole on the person's image.

She admitted that she was using her twin sister's travel documents.

The individual was given an administrative penalty of a 1,500 yuan fine and had the travel documents confiscated, per the law.
