被尊称为“医学之父”的希波克拉底（《希波克拉底誓言》仍是今天医护人员的重要职业道德准则）曾提出过体液学说。这种学说认为人体内有４种不同类型的体液：血液、粘液、黄胆汁和黑胆汁。一旦脾分泌的黑胆汁过多，人就会感到抑郁——持续的心情灰暗，无缘由地长期感到恐惧或伤心。直到17世纪，神经学家Thomas Willis才认识到抑郁与体液无关，而是一种涉及大脑功能的复杂病变。虽然人们慢慢接受了抑郁是一种生理失调，而非古人认为的巫蛊抑或魔障之害（中世纪时抑郁的女性会被当作巫婆活活烧死），但是目前仍没有长期和有效的治疗方法。美国有12%的人正在服用抗抑郁药物，且自杀率已经攀升到30年来最高点。
