深入解读

Lieutenant 是一个在英美军事题材的影视剧中经常可以碰到的军衔称号，通常用来表示美国陆军、空军、海军陆战队“中尉（first lieutenant）、少尉（second lieutenant）”、英国陆军“中尉”，以及英美海军和英国空军“上尉”。比如：

而从词源上来看， lieutenant 一词最早于14世纪末由古法语 lieu tenant （代替者、副手）进入英语，其本义则是指“副手、副职、助理”，特别是“副职官员、助理官员、代理官员”，即帮助上级履行职责的人，或者在上级无法履行职责时代理履行职责的人。

由于副职的级别仅低于正职，因此 lieutenant 进而还被用来构成复合词表示“仅低于……官阶的官员”，比如中校（a lieutenant colonel ）。

等到了16世纪70年代后， lieutenant 开始用在军事领域中表示上述“中尉”含义，意即仅次于上尉（captain）且在上尉不在时指挥连队（company）的军官。
