Caixin Roundtable Osaka
Navigating Global Challenges in the Asian Century
June 30, 2019
Osaka, Japan
Asia has become a key growth engine for the global economy. Over the past decades, most Asian countries have benefited tremendously from globalization and made the transition to middle-income and even advanced-economy status, lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. While the global trade and economic system is under stress today, Asian countries see new incentives and necessity to enhance collaboration.
On June 28 and 29, 2019, Japan will host its first-ever G-20 Summit in Osaka. On the sidelines of the Summit, Caixin Media will convene a roundtable on June 30 at Hilton Osaka and gather key decision-makers, high-level executives, and renowned academics to examine the challenges facing Asia in a new global era and explore opportunities for fair and sustainable development in the middle of a historic transformation.

12:50-13:20 Topic 1: Shared Future in Asia
Asia is home to 60 percent of the world’s population and represents more than 30 percent of world GDP. Beyond China and Japan, the ASEAN is predicted to become the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2030. Mega trade deals both within ASEAN and among Asia-Pacific economies are competing to set regional standards and reshaping the world economic order. As Asia has become more complex, addressing challenges increasingly requires an open and inclusive multilateral system. From the AEC (ASEAN Economic Community), CPTPP to RCEP, economic integration driven by trade and investment is already under way and will lead to greater macroeconomic benefits. Meanwhile, Asia also faces important challenges to its long-term growth prospects, such as increased financial market volatility, rising trade tensions, and demographic change. Questions to be discussed may include:
-
What’s the prospect of the AEC, CPTPP and RCEP and its implication for world trade order?
-
How should financing solutions and instruments be diversified to meet the $1.7 trillion per year needed in infrastructural investment for maintaining sustainable growth in the Asia-Pacific?
-
How can Asian authorities recalibrate their policy mix to support growth while preserving financial stability?
-
How can Asian emerging economies avoid or overcome the middle-income trap, and deliver effective and sustainable solutions towards a more inclusive growth?
-
How can businesses and investment in Asia navigate the challenges of the rising trade tensions? And what are the new opportunities for businesses and investment in the region?

13:20-13:50 Topic 2: Putting Asia at the Forefront of Innovation
Over the years, Asia’s well-being has been furthered by science and technology. Both public and private sector investment upgraded industries, fueled innovation, and increased competitiveness, putting Asia at the spearhead of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Digital innovation has accounted for nearly one-third of Asia’s per capita growth, and appears to be associated with higher firm productivity, economic prosperity and social connections. Moreover, innovation is important to help address global challenges, such as climate change and sustainable development. Questions to be discussed may include:
-
What does the fourth industrial revolution mean for Asia and how to make it count for sustainable development?
-
How should the public and private sectors collaborate to handle the bumpy transition to an increasingly digital future?
-
How can we make new economy connected between countries by facilitating free flow of goods, capital and data?
-
How can we improve access to capital and finance for tech start-ups and innovation driven entrepreneurs?
-
How can digitalization improve social welfare over the long run, including education, healthcare, environment, infrastructure, among others?
