Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ruled out negotiations with Donald Trump’s administration, citing past experiences dealing with the US president and vowing to respond forcefully to any threats against the Islamic republic.

“With such a government there should not be any negotiations as it is neither wise, nor prudent, nor dignified,” Khamenei, the country’s ultimate decision maker, told Iranian military forces on Friday.

He referred to the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, which Trump withdrew from in 2018 before imposing the toughest sanctions on the Islamic republic to date. “This is our experience with them,” Khamenei said. “We have to use it.”

US dealmaking has suffered its worst start to a year in a decade after policy volatility following Donald Trump’s election and escalating rhetoric over tariffs put a sudden chill on activity.

The overall number of US mergers and acquisitions collapsed nearly 30 per cent in January to 873 deals compared with a year ago, the lowest level since 2015, according to LSEG data. In dollar terms, deal activity fell 18 per cent compared with a year ago.

“It’s incredibly volatile. Whatever you thought of prior administration policy, it provided a steady and predictable backdrop for markets,” said Antonio Weiss, a veteran dealmaker and partner at boutique adviser SSW.

Aqqaluk Lynge is talking about a previous offer from the US to buy the island as he pores over a map of the Arctic, when a warship suddenly appears outside his window.

“It’s not the Americans,” says the pioneer of Greenland’s home-rule movement with a laugh, looking out on to the fjord in Nuuk.

The ageing patrol boat is Danish, intended to protect its sovereignty over the world’s largest non-continental island, an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

India’s central bank has cut its benchmark interest rate for the first time in almost five years in an effort to shore up economic growth and reverse a broad downturn in the world’s most populous country.

The decision to cut the headline repo rate by 0.25 percentage points to 6.25 per cent was unanimous and widely anticipated by a consensus of economists.

“A less restrictive monetary policy is more appropriate at this current juncture,” said Reserve Bank of India governor Sanjay Malhotra, a former revenue secretary who took office in December.
