This is teacher Nelli, one of the superstar teachers here at 51 Talk.

同学们大家好！

我是Nelli老师，51Talk超级外教中的一员。

This week we will learn some expressions when you are at some places in town. Today let us listen to a dialogue between a doctor and a patient-- Cathy .They are in the hospital and the patient wants to know her condition.

这周我们将学习城市生活常用表达。今天我们一起听一段大夫和病人（凯西）之间的对话。他们在医院，病人想要了解自己的病情。

DOCTOR:    What seems to be the problem?

大夫：怎么了？

CATHY:      Well, I have a bad cough and a sore throat. I also have a headache.

凯西：嗯，我咳得挺厉害，而且嗓子还有点儿疼。我头也疼。

DOCTOR:    How long have you had these symptoms?

大夫：症状出现持续多久了？

CATHY:   About three days now. And I’m really tired, too.

凯西：差不多有三天了。我感觉很疲惫。

DOCTOR:     Hmm. It sounds like you’ve got the flu. Take aspirin every four hours and get plenty of rest. Make sure you drink lots of fluids. Call me if you’re still sick next week.

大夫：哦。你应该是得感冒了。每四个小时吃一次阿司匹林然后多休息。一定要多喝水。下周你要是还没好的话就给我打电话。

CATHY:   OK, thanks.

凯西：好的，谢谢。

短文讲解：

What seems to be the problem?

means “What is the problem?” Notice that the intonation falls at the end of the question. The doctor wants information, not a “yes/no” answer.

意思是“什么事？或者”怎么了？”留意结尾用的是降调。大夫要的是信息，不是yes/no

Well

is used as an introductory word. Notice how the vowel is drawn out, to sound like “Weeeeeell …” This can be used as a way to “buy time” while you think about what you want to say next.

Well是一种语气词。注意这里的元音拉长，听起来有点像weeeeell。这是用来给自己争取一点时间来思考如何回答对方。

A bad cough … a sore throat … a headache

Notice the article “a” before each symptom.

A bad cough… A sore throat… A headache: 留意每种症状前面都加A。

About

is used to mean “more or less.” It’s used here to give an estimate of time.

About是用来表示或多或少。这里用来给出大概时间。

Take aspirin … get rest … Make sure … Call me

Notice the doctor uses the simple tense here to give instructions. This is the imperative form of the verb.

留意大夫用的是一般现在时来给出指示。这是祈使句的用法。

Still sick

means “continue to be sick.”

意思是还没好，还没恢复
