Four years after Joaquin Phoenix won the Best Actor Oscar for his psychological thriller Joker, its sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux, was released in theaters across the Chinese mainland on Oct 19.

In this new film, Phoenix reprises his role as the titular character, Arthur Fleck, with Lady Gaga playing Lee Quinzel, a psychiatry student from a wealthy New York family. The plot delves into Fleck’s internal struggle with his dual personas as both a struggling comedian and the infamous Joker, all while navigating his romantic relationship with Quinzel during his confinement at Arkham State Hospital.

Director Todd Phillips explained his decision to produce the sequel by reflecting on the unexpected success of the first Joker film in 2018, emphasizing that neither he nor Phoenix could have anticipated the profound impact it would have on audiences worldwide.

In his official Venice Film Festival director’s statement for Joker 2, Phillips revealed that he and Joaquin had casually discussed a sequel, but it wasn’t until they observed the response to the first film that they took the idea seriously.

“If we were going to do it, we knew we had to swing for the fences; we wanted to create something as crazy and fearless as Joker himself. So, Scott Silver and I wrote a script that delved further into the idea of identity. Who is Arthur Fleck? And where does the music inside him come from?” writes Phillips in the statement.

Despite the controversial reviews, the film has currently amassed over 36 million yuan ($5.1 million) at the box office, securing the third slot of the country’s single-day box office charts on Sunday.
