Located just outside New York City, Upper Bloomfield Brownstone is a benchmark in the region architectural heritage. The original facade has been completely restored, while inside, the layout of the front hall, living room and corridor, leading to the entrance to the living room, remains original. When the clients were ready to begin their renovation, they wanted to retain the classic brownstone style while organizing the layout in a contemporary way to fit their lifestyle and young family.

The newly extended three-story space adds a garden to accommodate the living needs of a large family. The second floor houses a living room, kitchen and dining room, while the upper level houses a series of refurbished spaces for sleeping, bathing, working and relaxing. Brownstones can be challenging to take in light because they often only have windows on two sides. In response, the designers incorporated glazing into the rear extension, including an oversized glass door in the dining room, which floods the kitchen and living room with natural light.

Upper Bloomfield Brownstone reflects the client love of historic homes, mixing decorative elements from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The soft furnishings, with their rich tones and sophisticated finishes, are balanced by simple forms that enrich the entire house with gorgeous details. The designers not only restored and reused the original doors, hardware, and mantels, but also introduced beautiful ceiling medallions in the newly remodeled rooms. These classic touches keep pace with the family evolving characters. Light-colored walls and sheer curtains brighten the overall visual effect.

For J. Patryce Design, subtle yet rich details are crucial. They usually start by gathering some sensory material and then apply it thoughtfully. A harmonious palette of warm oak, natural limestone, marble, leather and unfilled lime creates a sense of tranquil luxury throughout the home. In the kitchen, the marble backboard and island come in colors of rosy, sandy, teal and sage, inspiring a subtle yet dramatic feel that contrasts with the rest of the home.
