Hailed "queen of the movies", Hu Die (1908-89) didn't have typical physical features that define a pretty actress today.


如果按照现在判断一个女演员漂亮与否的标准,“电影皇后”胡蝶缺乏很多“硬性指标”。

She didn't have a pointed chin, her face was round and plump, making her eyes look not that big, and she was not as skinny as many actresses we see on TV and big screen.


比如她没有尖下巴。圆润的脸型让她的眼睛看起来没有那么吓人得大,她也没有如今屏幕里演员和模特那种不食人间烟火的瘦削。


But she transmits a demeanor of grace, confidence and mental independence which distinguish her from a lot of women of her time, and claim her an icon of timeless beauty.


但胡蝶自有一种端庄的仪态,散发着独立和自信。这使得她区别于同时代的许多女性。她的美是经典而永恒的。


 

Li Zhen, a historian of China Film Art Research Center in Beijing, said Hu Die was brave to show a woman's beauty, and she daringly questioned feudal ethics and social inequity.


中国电影艺术研究中心的李镇先生说,胡蝶的精神气质在于她敢于展现女性的美,敢于质疑腐朽的礼教和社会的不公。


"In many photos of women of her time, I see in them fear, weakness and confusions. While Hu's eyes convey a positive and persistent attitude, revealing her modern consciousness."


“我见到的民国时期很多女性的照片,她们的眼神中有畏惧、软弱和困惑。但是胡蝶的眼睛里是主动而坚定的态度,这本身就是一种现代意识。”



At this ongoing exhibition, Butterfly Wu: Queen of the Movies, we can see a rare collection of the legendary actress' portraits, both for publicity use and taken in private, especially after she moved to Hong Kong and later Canada where she died.


今天的标题就来自李镇老师为展览《影后胡蝶》撰写的文章。在这个位于泰康空间的展览上,我们能看到一批她参加公开活动及私人时间中拍摄的罕见照片。尤其是她移居香港和加拿大后的照片,都是首次在国内展出。

Also, there are stills of her major films, and some of these films are screened in rotation. The photos are all from a holding of Hu Die's family, hence providing us an uncommon glimpse into her life and work.


当然也少不了大量的剧照,其中她的几部经典电影也在现场播映。这些照片都来自于胡蝶家人的私人收藏,因此为我们了解她的生活和演艺生涯提供了难得的视角。

Some of these snapshots depict her performance in the silent era. Actors at the time performed dramatically while Hu Die insisted with a natural, realistic style and was therefore called "beauty with a poker face" by staff at the film studios.


一部分图片展现的是胡蝶在默片时代的表现。那个时候的很多演员表演夸张,但是胡蝶坚持自然的而源于现实的表演风格,也因此被一些电影公司的工作人员称为“石膏美人”。


While it also helped her adapt to the sound era smoothly. Her portrayal of real-life figures which is true to human nature was widely recognized.


然而正是这种自然的表演风格帮助胡蝶顺利过渡到了有声电影时代。她塑造了不少真实生活中的人物,忠于人性,让她的演技得到了愈加广泛的认可。



Hu Die was among the first students at China Film School, the country's first actor training school opened in 1924.


中国的第一家演员培训学校,中华电影学校,开办于1924年,而胡蝶是最早的学员之一。


Li said in addition to the acting class, students also learned comprehensively, including film history and directing, photography, dancing, singing, makeup, driving, horse riding and swimming.


李老师说当时在这所电影学校,学生除了学习表演外还接受了许多知识和技能的培训,包括电影史、导演、摄影、舞蹈、歌唱、化妆、驾驶、骑马和游泳等。

Hu Die starred in commercially successful movies and also movies that addressed social concerns and national crisis.


接受了这样“全方位”培训的胡蝶出演了许多成功的商业片,同时也拍摄了不少关注社会现实及反映民族危亡的电影。


Her 1928 martial arts film The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple claimed a box office success and the film company produced 17 sequels.


她在1928年出演了《火烧红莲寺》。由于这部武侠电影票房大卖,电影公司随后又连续拍摄了17部续集!

She also chose scripts socially worthy, such as Raging Waves, a film on life struggles of the rural people and set in a flood in 1931, and Chen Yuanyuan the Beauty in which she personated a patriotic concubine to rally people to resist against the Japanese aggression.


胡蝶同时注意选取那些有社会意义的剧本,比如《狂流》这部电影,它以1931年的大水灾为背景来刻画农民的苦苦挣扎。还有《绝代佳人》,胡蝶在里面塑造了具有爱国主义精神的陈圆圆一角,号召国民抵抗日本侵略者。

After Hu Die turned 40, cynical reviews said she was losing luster on the big screen.


在胡蝶40岁后,常有刻薄的媒体报道说她的荧幕风光不再。


She was indifferent to the sarcasm. She said, "Whether it is in life or on the stage, one can't always play the leading role."


对此她不以为意,还表示:“无论在生活中还是舞台上,一个人都不可能永远是主角。”

At 52, Hu Die won the best actress award at the seventh Asian Film Festival in Tokyo for her performance in Rear Door.


52岁的时候,胡蝶因为在电影《后门》中的表演而获得当年(1960) 在东京举办的第七届亚洲电影节最佳女演员奖。


She retired from films at 60, after starring in some 90 movies in a career spanning more than four decades.


在40多年的表演生涯中,胡蝶出演了90多部电影。在60岁的时候,她告别影坛。
