Apple Inc. has teamed up with e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. to develop artificial intelligence (AI) features for iPhones in China, sources familiar with the matter told Caixin.

The iPhone maker is intensifying its collaboration with Alibaba on AI large model technology, but it remains unclear whether Apple will work exclusively with a single company, according to three sources.

Apple and Alibaba haven’t replied to Caixin’s inquires.

苹果手机AI功能发布5个月后，中国区相关服务正在寻求国内合作方。三位知情人士向财新称，苹果已经和阿里巴巴推进AI大模型技术合作，但未透露是否会仅选择一家合作方。

Alibaba’s shares surged as much as 8.6% in New York Wednesday, marking their biggest jump since September, before closing 1.3% higher at $112.78. Apple stock gained 2.18%.

The development comes after months of speculation about Apple’s AI strategy in China, where its market share has been increasingly challenged by domestic competitors such as Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and Oppo Co. Ltd.

In June, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to launch its first AI feature, Apple Intelligence, which integrates ChatGPT into the Apple ecosystem to enable document editing, content summarization and AI-powered photo editing. Apple began rolling out the feature to American users in October, before making it available to English-speaking users in the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.

2024年9月，苹果称将在2025年上线苹果AI的中文版，而由于ChatGPT无法在国内使用，苹果在中国市场的AI技术合作方就受到广泛猜测。除阿里巴巴之外，包括百度、腾讯、字节跳动、智谱AI等公司都一度被传是苹果在中国市场的潜在合作方。

Apple has been carefully selecting a Chinese model that is suitable both technologically and for practical implementation, a source told Caixin. “Baidu’s large model team and its business cooperation team are separate, which makes integration with Apple more difficult,” they added.

In January, Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba, released its latest AI large language model (LLM) Qwen2.5-Max, which the company said outperformed several leading AI models in key benchmarks. According to Chatbot Arena, an open platform that evaluates the LLMs and AI chatbots, Qwen2.5-Max ranked 7th in the world, below the R1 model from the domestic startup DeepSeek. Other top-ranking models are all from U.S. companies. A source at Alibaba Cloud told Caixin that its inference model would also be launched soon.

“百度的大模型团队和商务合作团队并非同一团队，这并不有利于和苹果落地AI，”一位知情人士告诉财新，苹果一直在选择技术和落地上都合适的中国模型。

阿里通义1月推出的大模型Qwen2.5-Max，AI模型评测平台Chatbot Arena的排名中为全球第7，低于国内创业公司DeepSeek推出的模型R1但高于V3。其他排名靠前的模型均为美国公司模型。一位阿里云内部人士此前曾向财新透露其推理模型也将尽快推出。

Various Chinese tech companies offer AI model services, but several are in competition or conflict with Apple. Tencent’s WeChat and ByteDance’s TikTok, both super apps, have clashed with Apple over its 30% App Store commission, as Apple has pressured them to stop bypassing the payment system. Huawei is a direct competitor to Apple’s devices and a target of U.S. sanctions.
