5 Skills of Productive and Valuable People
It’s no surprise that managers rate top performers as their most valuable employees, but we wanted to know just how valuable those people really are to their bosses and organisations. So, we asked more than 1,500 managers and employees and what we found is that employees rated by their managers as 9 or 10 on a 10 points-performance scale, are 3 Times more valuableto an organisation than the average employee. 3 Times! And it does not end there. These productive employees aren’t just more valuable, according to their bosses, they are also responsible for 61% of the total work done in their departments.
Now at this point you might be thinking: These Top Performers are also stressed-out workaholics, right? But you’re wrong, according to our study, 83% of managers say a 10’s work habits actually reduce his or her stress. In fact, 9’s and 10’s are actually less stressed than their underperforming colleagues. So, exactly what are those stress-reducing performance-enhancing habits of highly-productive and highly-valuable employees; it turns out that there are a handful of 5 roductivity practices Top Performers do consistently to not only add value to their organisation, but also reduce their own stress. The Good news is you can do their too. Here are just a few of them:
#1. Collect everything that owns a piece of your attention.
Capture all your commitments, tasks, ideas and projects rather than keeping them in your head. Remember: Your head is for having ideas, not for holding them. Use just a few capture tools that you keep with you all the time. May be that’s an App, a Notepad, your email even just paper and pen.
#2. Decide what your stuff means to you.
Clarify if the items you captured have an action or not. If they do have an action, be very clear about the very next action is, and who should take it. When you have clear next actions, rather than vague ‘To-Do’s’, you are much more likely to get things done.
#3. Use the Two-Minute rule.
If an action can be completed in 2-minutes of less, just do it immediately don’t defer it. The time you waste letting a simple action just occupy your attention and your ‘to-do’ list is not worth it. 2 minutes becomes your efficiency cut-off.
#4. Do more of the right things by reflecting in the right moments.
Rather than diving in your messy inbox first thing in the morning, take a couple of minutes to look at your calendar and your next actions lists first. This moment of review ensures that you make decision about how you use your time. So you won’t be constantly driven by the latest and the loudest stuff.
