10月2日，新闻#特朗普确诊新冠#冲上了热搜，可能很多同学和我一样，当时都正在享受着难得的小长假。

国庆节收假了，我们不得不重新回到魔幻的现实世界，直面种种奇葩的新闻。

这两天，我阅读了一系列关于#特朗普确诊新冠#相关的报道后，挑出了一个高频出现的小词：plunge，跟大家讲一讲。

plunge

✏️ plunge ≈ dive, jump

plunge 作动词时，其原义表示：突然前冲或向下地 「 跳；跌落 」 。与 我们熟悉的jump, dive意思很相近。但plunge更强调动作的猛烈和速度，有点汉语里「一头扎进水里」的感觉。

举两个简单的例子：

Lisa ran to the edge of the pool and plunged in .

丽莎跑到池边，纵身跳进水里。

A newlywed couple were killed when their plane plunged to the ground just 15 minutes after taking off from Telluride Airport, in the US state of Colorado.

一对新婚夫妇乘坐的航班在从科罗拉多州特柳赖德机场起飞15分钟后坠机撞击地面，二人不幸身亡。

两年前，重庆万州公交车坠江事故引起了全国人民的关注，《中国日报》在报道该事件时曾这样写道：

Fistfight between the driver and a passenger caused Chongqing bus to plunge into Yangtze River in southwest China.

plunge 由「跳」引申出来的一个高频词义： 「暴跌，骤降」 ，非常的生动形象。英文释义是：to fall swiftly and drasticly in value or amount.

NBC News称，特朗普感染新冠病毒对期货市场产生重大影响，文章标题便用到了这个词：

Dow futures plunge 500 points as Trump says he tested positive for Covid-19.

特朗普确诊新冠，道指期货暴跌500点。

上半年，CNN一篇关于瑞幸咖啡财务造假的报道的标题是这么写的：

China's Luckin coffee plunges 75% on accounting probe.

会计调查中被发现造假，瑞幸咖啡股票暴跌75%。

再比如《纽约时报》一篇报道中国疫情的文章里有这样一句话：

Beijing’s options are risky. New data on Thursday showed the number of newly confirmed infections had plunged sharply. Much of that drop, however, appeared to reflect a narrowing in the definition of a confirmed infection.

北京如何选择都有风险。周四的新数据显示，新确诊的感染人数大幅下降。不过，这种下降在很大程度上是因为政府缩小了确诊感染的定义。

✏️ plunge (sth/sb) into sth

plunge into sth 本义是「跳进...」，引申为「一头扎到...事情中」，表示 「投入到 ... 」 ，英文释义是： to suddenly start doing something actively or enthusiastically.

to plunge into the marriage 就是一个很常见的表达，以至于有人在拍婚纱照的时候，真的会一起跳水，或者进行蹦极、跳伞这类刺激的项目。

我们再来看两个例子：

As soon as they got there, they plunged into study. 他们一到那里就投入到学习中。

She plunged into books. 她埋头扎到书里了。

再比如，《纽约时报》一篇关于印度城市精英阶层参政的报道中，标题就用到了这个表达：

plunge into sth 还可表示 「陷入...，卷入...」 的含义 ， 英文释义是： to suddenly experience a difficult or unpleasant situation. 一般与表示贬义的名词连用。

plunge 既可作不及物动词，用作 sb/sth p lunges into sth ，表示「经历，陷入」。

plunge 也可作及物动词，用作 plunge sb/sth int o sth ，表示「使...经历，使...陷入」

这是一个外刊高频表达。《纽约时报》一篇关于特朗普确诊新冠的报道就用到了这个词：

plunge sth into extraordinary uncertainty 这个短语可以背下来，表示「让...陷入巨大的不确定性中，让...陷入巨大的不安中」

《纽约时报》在报道英国首相约翰逊感染新冠病毒时，也用到了这个词：

plunge (n.)

plunge 作名词时，其含义与动词一致，都表示 「 跳 」 。因此它也可以表示 「暴跌，骤降」 。

《金融时报》有一篇文章介绍新冠肺炎疫情对游乐园的影响，其标题为：

Covid sends rollercoasters on a big plunge

The pandemic has hit theme parks and movie theatres hard, adding to disruption from streaming

新冠肺炎疫情令过山车暴跌。

疫情重创主题乐园和影院，使其被流媒体打击的市场进一步压缩。
